Dhaka, January 16: The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has demanded that all religions be prayed in the National Assembly according to their own religious rites. The demand was made at a press conference held at Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club on Saturday. They also demanded speedy implementation of the law on restitution of vested property.

Advocate Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of the organisation, said in a written statement, "We believe that in the interest of equality, justice and democracy, the hope of all religious communities in Bangladesh is to end religious discrimination in the Bangladesh National Assembly."

"In that case, from the golden jubilee year of independence, at the beginning of the parliamentary session and on every working day, an initiative should be taken to read from the holy scriptures of all religions.

"We also appeal to the Speaker and the government to observe silence on the death of all religiously wise MPs or eminent persons, as well as to take initiative to pray according to the religious rites of their own MPs and eminent persons."

He further said, "From today's press conference, we are rejecting the draft of Bangladesh Law Act, 2020 of the Law Commission with hatred. At the same time, I am urging the High Court Division of the Supreme Court to expedite the implementation of the law on the return of property promised by the government."

Among others present at the press conference were Dr. Nim Chandra Bhowmik, acting president of the organization, and Bhikkhu Sunanda Priya, joint general secretary.
