Dhaka, Sept 22: Visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders of Bangladesh and Myanmar has been restored under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Visa Services between the two countries.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar, Dr. Md. Monowar Hossain, has been in contact with relevant authorities in Myanmar for the resumption of the visa waiver service in recent weeks. Myanmar finally agreed to re-introduce the relevant provision on September 14. This was stated in a press release in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Foreign Offices of both countries have completed the necessary formalities for the reinstatement of the MoU. The Bangladesh Embassy in Yangon communicated the Bangladesh government's consent to Myanmar through diplomatic communications.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed in 2004, was unilaterally suspended by the Myanmar authorities on March 28, 2020, as a precautionary measure to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. Under the relaunched MoU, diplomats and official passport holders of both countries can travel to each other's countries for a maximum of 90 days without a visa.

The press release stated that the reinstatement of the MoU will not only facilitate official visits but also strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.
