Visa policy for free and fair elections: Uzra Zeya

Dhaka, July 13: Regarding the US visa policy imposed on Bangladesh, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights in the United States, Uzra Zeya, said that the policy has been formulated for free and fair elections in the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also promised free and fair elections, and this visa policy will help fulfill that promise.

Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim gave this information in a press briefing after Uzra Zeya's meeting with the Prime Minister at Ganabhaban on Thursday morning. US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu and US Ambassador to Dhaka Peter Haas were present during the meeting.

Ihsanul Karim said, in the meeting, various issues were discussed including the upcoming parliamentary elections of Bangladesh, US visa policy, Rohingya crisis. Meanwhile, Uzra Zeya said that they have no bias towards any party. They want an impartial, free and fair election.

Regarding fair elections, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that it is her commitment to conduct free and fair elections in the country. "We have always said that free and fair elections have been held before," she said. She and her family have always fought for people's rights since their student days. They have fought for free and fair elections, people's right to vote.

The Awami League president said, "I will give my vote to whomever I want", the people will choose their representatives, her party has always struggled to realize this right of the people.

"We saw how BNP rigged votes in the past. We struggled to change that. We have tried to introduce a transparent ballot box," she added.

Referring to BNP's movement in the past days, Sheikh Hasina said, during 2013-15, BNP and its allies committed brutality, terrorist activities and arson, 500 people were killed in their terrorist activities.

Referring to being attacked on different occasions, Sheikh Hasina said that she was repeatedly attacked with the intention of killing. On August 21, 2004, an attempt was made to kill him with a grenade attack, the activists and supporters saved his life by making a human wall.

Uzra Zeya spoke about Rohingya during the interview. The US Under Secretary told the Prime Minister to visit the Rohingya camps and talk to the refugees. He emphasized on strengthening the concerted efforts of the international community to ensure the return of the Rohingyas to their motherland.

Uzra Zeya said that the United States will pay 74 million US dollars for the operating expenses of the Rohingya camp. She praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to a large number of Rohingyas.
