Visit of the Myanmar delegation to Bangladesh delayed due to Cyclone Mocha

Dhaka, May 19: Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Seheli Sabrin, said that the visit of the Myanmar delegation to Bangladesh is being delayed due to the cyclone.

She shared this information in a briefing at the conference room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

After the on-ground visit to Rakhine on May 5, the Rohingyas said that they will not return to Rakhine if Myanmar does not grant them land rights and citizenship. When asked about the updated information on the repatriation process in such a situation, he said that on May 5, a delegation from Bangladesh and the first batch of 20 Rohingyas visited Mungdu in Rakhine, Myanmar for repatriation. On the ground, the vague things that the Rohingyas have said after returning from Rakhine, have already been informed to Myanmar. A delegation from Myanmar is expected to visit Bangladesh at or near convenient time in May for talks with Rohingyas selected for repatriation.

Seheli Sabrin said, the Myanmar team that will come to Bangladesh to brief the Rohingyas scheduled for repatriation in the first batch, among other things, they will provide more information on this matter. Which will help in gaining the confidence of Rohingyas.

When she was asked when the delegation of Myanmar will come, and when the repatriation can start, the spokesperson said, Rakhine has suffered a lot due to Cyclone Mocha. Initially they were supposed to arrive this May. But now when they will come or when the repatriation will start, the exact date has not been fixed. However, the date will be decided soon subject to discussions between the two governments.

In response to a question, Seheli Sabrin said that the Rohingyas returned from their visit to Rakhine and gave some observations. Then we informed the Myanmar government. And because of Mocha, the Myanmar delegation's visit to Bangladesh is being delayed.
