Voting starts in Sylhet and Rajshahi cities

Dhaka, June 21: After Gazipur, Barisal and Khulna City Corporation, the polling of Sylhet and Rajshahi City Corporations is being held today (Wednesday, June 21).

Voting is being conducted through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in both the cities. Voting will continue from 8 am to 4 pm. A general holiday has been declared in these two cities for the convenience of voters.

According to the EC, there will be limited traffic in the constituencies. The EC is monitoring the polling of the two cities from the election building of Agargaon in Dhaka through CCTV. Election Commissioner Brigadier (Retd.) General Md. Ahsan Habib Khan has already said that all preparations for the election have been completed.

According to EC, voting is being done through EVMs in 3,204 centres in Sylhet city and 2,500 centres in Rajshahi city. The commission is monitoring the polling of Sylhet city with 1,747 CC cameras and Rajshahi city with 1,463 CC cameras from the election building.

EC Ahsan Habib Khan said that every election is equally important and challenging for us. Taking experience from all the elections, trying to fulfill the expectations of the voters. Ever since the announcement of the schedule, we have been strict in ensuring compliance with election rules. As before, we have taken all steps to make Rajshahi and Sylhet city elections free, fair and impartial, keeping a close eye on every step.

Besides, we will monitor this election directly from Dhaka on CC camera. Strict instructions have been given to prevent irregularities, riots and violence before the election, on the day of the election and after the election. Effective measures have been taken locally to enforce the code of conduct. Along with this, the candidature of a councilor candidate in Sylhet has also been canceled after investigating the complaint.

He said that the administration, police, law enforcement and polling officials have given hundred percent assurance to maintain a peaceful environment for the smooth exercise of voting rights. We have created equal opportunities for all and have not given any concession to irregularities or chaos in the election campaign.
