Warrant issued to produce BNP leader Mirza Abbas in court in case of acquisition of illegal wealth

Dhaka, Jan 6: The court has issued an arrest warrant to bring BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas to court on January 16 in the case of illegal acquisition of Tk 20 crore 74 lakh 47 thousand. He is in jail in a case filed at Paltan police station on charges of planning and instigating attacks on police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Asaduzzaman gave the order on Thursday (January 5). On that day, the charge sheet of the case against Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas is scheduled to be received.

Earlier on December 27, ACC investigation officer and deputy director Md. Nurul Huda filed a charge sheet against BNP leader Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas in the court. Afroza Abbas is on bail in this case.

In a press briefing at the ACC head office, ACC Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain said that there is no political link here. The ACC conducts investigations in accordance with its own rules. Assets of Tk 20 crore 74 lakh 47 thousand 828 in the name of Afroza Abbas are actually acquired from income from illegal sources with the help and medium of her husband Mirza Abbas.

He also said that Mirza Abbas was a Member of Parliament, Minister and Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation from 1991 to 1995 and Minister of Housing and Public Works from 2001 to 2006. He acquired that wealth in the name of Afroza Abbas till August 16, 2007 through bribery and corruption on the basis of being a Member of Parliament, Mayor and Minister.

Meanwhile, DB arrested Abbas from his home on the night of December 8. He is in jail since the next day.
