Dhaka, August 20: The Padma and Jamuna rivers in Pabna are overflowing due to continuous rains. Meanwhile, the water level in several rivers including Ichhamati, Hurasagar, Gumani and Chalanbil flowing through the district has risen by 18 cm. Water is flowing in the Padma River at Pakshi Hardinge Bridge Point in Ishwardi Upazila just below the danger level of 16 cm. On the other hand, the water in the river Jamuna is rising every day.

It is learned that water is flowing in the low lying areas along the banks of Padma and Jamuna. Water is entering the low lying areas every day. The fields of various vegetables and crops are sinking. The people on the shores are becoming waterlogged. Many are already busy moving their homes. Many are worried about losing their resources.

Mosharraf Hossain, an assistant engineer at the Pabna Pani Water Development Board (Paubo), said the water level at Hardinge Bridge Point on the Padma River had risen by 18 cm in the last 24 hours. The water level at this point is now 14.09 meters. The danger level at Pakshi Hardinge Bridge Point is 15.25 meters.

He said the situation was not yet conducive to providing relief. People are staying in their homes. When seeking refuge elsewhere, relief is essential. Even then, if the budget is received from above, relief assistance will be given in the areas affected by waterlogging and river erosion.

Abdul Khaleq, an assistant engineer at Bera Paubo, said water was flowing into the Jamuna River six cm below the danger line. The water level was 10 centimeters on Friday morning. He said water has already entered several areas. Cropland has been flooded and water has entered houses. If the upstream slope, heavy rains and flood waters continue to rise in this way, there is a danger of a big disaster ahead.

According to the locals, as a result of the increase in water in the Padma, water has flooded the houses of Nimai Roy, Haripad and Nizam Uddin of Huzur Ali in Arambaria Pal Para of Ishwardi Upazila. Crops in Charkamalpur, Bilkada, Charkurlia and several other areas of Laxmikunda Union have been severely damaged due to flooding.

On the other hand, more than four hundred people in the char areas including Purbasrikanthadia, Charshafulla and Khairbagan Bazar of the new Varenga Union have lost their houses and become destitute.
