Dhaka, December 9: Prime Minister SHeikh Hasina has said that the Awami League-run government has done everthing it could do towards BNP party chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia's treatment.

Addressing a discussion meeting on the occasion of 49th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Awami Juba League on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said, "We have allowed Khaleda Zia to stay at home and seek medical help whenever required. Isn't that enough? Didn't we show heart with this gesture? What do they (BNP leaders) expect from us?"

She took part in the discussion meeting held at Krishibid Institution auditorium in the capital from Ganobhaban.

The Prime Minister said, "Khaleda Zia's elder sister, brother-in-law and brother had come to visit me. Sheikh Rehana [Hasina's sister] was also there with me. I used my executive powers to stall her jail term and arranged for her treatment at home."

"Khaleda Zia is receiving treatment at Bangladesh costliest and most modern hospital. Tareque's (Rahman) wife is also a doctor. I have heard that she treats her (Khaleda) via video conferencing. Where is the issue here?" the Prime Minister asked.

Hasina said that Khaleda had followed in Zia's footsteps in rewarding the murderers of the Father of the Nation and rehabilitating the war criminals. "I want to ask the BNP leaders, you talk about care and cooperation. Do you remember Khaleda Zia's behaviour towards us?"

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina also raised the issue of not providing medical facilities to the leaders and army officers of various political parties, including the imprisoned Awami League leaders and workers, during the BNP rule.

"The BNP government did not even allow former army chief General Mostafizur Rahman to undergo treatment at CMH. He was taken to court on a stretcher from the ICU and presented for trial. They also canceled his promotion," the Prime Minister said.

Juba League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parosh presided over the discussion while Awami League presidium member and former youth leader Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Awami League organizing secretary Mirza Azam and Harunur Rashid spoke. General Secretary of Juba League Moinul Hossain Khan Nikhil conducted the function.
