Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 6 October 2023: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her commitment to the implementation of measures to ban nuclear weapons, saying, "We will use nuclear energy for peacekeeping. We have enacted the Nuclear Energy Control Act in Bangladesh. We have also established an independent Atomic Energy Control Authority."

The Prime Minister said these words while joining the uranium handover ceremony of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday afternoon. Russian President Vladimir Putin also joined and addressed the event virtually.

"We officially inaugurated the project in 2013. With your help, this power plant is on the brink of success with state-of-the-art technology," the Prime Minister told the Russian President.

Sheikh Hasina said, "I sincerely thank those who attended the ceremony. Today is a day of great pride for the people of Bangladesh. Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is seeing success with the efforts of the Awami League government. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the initiative to establish the nuclear power plant. With the cooperation of our friendly country Russia, we I built that nuclear power plant."

Hasina also said, "When I formed the government in 1996, I started working with the promise to provide electricity for all. I included nuclear power in the energy. I started implementing the Rooppur nuclear power plant project. However, I could not complete the work at that time. In the 2008 elections, We take up this project by forming the government after winning."

Referring to the use of nuclear energy in peacekeeping, the Prime Minister said, "We are strongly committed to the complete elimination of the use of nuclear weapons worldwide and the implementation of nuclear weapons prohibition measures. We have enacted the Atomic Energy Control Act in Bangladesh. We have established an independent Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority. This authority Ensuring safety at every level of nuclear power plants in close coordination with IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).”
