Dhaka, February 17: A Rohingya woman was killed and the team leader of a shed was shot by miscreants in the Ukhiya shelter camp of Cox's Bazar. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station, Sheikh Mohammad Ali, said that separate incidents took place in Camp-8 and Camp-12 on Thursday morning and afternoon.

Deceased Noor Kayes (25) was the wife of Najumuddin and daughter of Ahmad Hossain of Ukhiya Camp-8 Block-B/57. The shot head team leader Abdur Rahim (38) is the son of Karim Ullah of Camp-12. He was serving as the team leader of H-4 Block.

Hazera Khatun, the mother of the deceased Noor Qays, said that in the morning, a Rohingya named Arafat Hossain hit her daughter in the left side of the head and ran away. Noor Kayes, who was shot, died after being taken to Kutupalong MSF Hospital. Hazera Khatun claims that no one has any enmity with their family.

According to camp sources, the shot Arafat Hossain is a resident of Teknaf's Shalbagan camp area, but currently resides at the residence of his sister Noor Haba and brother-in-law Mahmudul Haque at Camp-8/East, Block-57. The reason for his shooting is not known. However, Arafat is known by many as a member of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), an armed organization in Rakhine.

On the other hand, around 12 noon, 4-5 persons wearing masks shot Abdur Rahim, the Head Majhi of H-4 Block of Camp-12, in the head and escaped. He was rescued and taken to the hospital in critical condition. After this incident there is panic in the entire camp area.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmad of 8 Armed Police Battalion (APBN) said that a Rohingya woman was killed in an attack by miscreants in the camp area. Another bullet victim is being treated at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. Currently the situation in the camp is under control. Patrolling has been intensified with additional police deployment at the scene.

Earlier on Wednesday (February 15) evening, miscreants fired at the patrolling police in B/7 Block of Camp-5. A police constable named Khairul Alam was shot dead.
