Dhaka, October 28: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a 30-year-old youth, identified as Ashish Mallick, 30, for spreading false information and provocative posts on social media about the Comilla incident.

The RAB said the accused Ashish Mallick was involved in a conspiracy to establish the country as a communal state by using hashtags in every post. He was provoking the people by uploading videos of various atrocities that took place in the neighbouring country.

RAB-1 Commander (CO) Lt. Col. Abdullah Al Momen made the remarks at a press conference at the RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar on Wednesday (October 27) afternoon.

He said the accused was arrested from Banani in the capital on Tuesday (October 26) night on charges of destroying communal harmony and spreading confusion by spreading false propaganda by opening groups on social media.

The RAB-1 commander said the arrested Ashish had confessed to his involvement in cyber crime. His ancestral home is in Chittagong district. He was running a coaching center after graduating from Dhaka College.

Al Momen said Ashish had been posting various provocative statements from his personal Facebook ID to a Facebook group after he opened it on October 16. He appointed himself and a few others like him as admins. Quickly the group members exceeded a few thousand. This Facebook group was spreading false information and provocative posts about the Comilla incident. Through this, communal harmony in Bangladesh was being destroyed and efforts were being made to spread violence.
