Zilla Parishad elections held in an orderly manner: CEC

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 18: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal claimed that the second Zilla Parishad election was conducted in an orderly manner.

He said, we have observed the election from the beginning. The election was conducted in a very orderly and peaceful manner. No information of violence-disturbance came to us from anywhere. We are satisfied with the information we have received from the centers.

He said these to the journalists at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon of the capital after the Zilla Parishad elections on Monday.

Referring to the new experience of monitoring the election through CCTV, CEC said, "This experience will give us an opportunity to conduct fair elections in the future. We have been saying since the beginning, we want fair elections. Voters can now exercise their right to vote properly."

Habibul Awal said, "Gaibandha election was monitored through CCTV and I noticed serious irregularities. The commission was forced to stop the election. A message came from there. Since the election is monitored through CC cameras, it can be stopped in case of irregularities. We think it has a positive impact on this election."

Polling started simultaneously in 57 district councils of the country on Monday (October 17) from 9 am. It ended at 2 pm. The election commission monitored the entire election from the election building through 1,400 CCTV cameras.

In this year's Zilla Parishad election, 92 candidates have been nominated for the post of chairman of 57 districts. 1,485 people are contesting for the post of member and 603 people are contesting for the post of the reserved member. The number of general wards in 57 districts is 448, reserved wards are 166. 462 polling stations and 925 polling booths. The total number of voters in 60,866.

Ahead of the polls, 26 chairmen, 18 women members, and 65 general members were elected uncontested. Chapainawabganj and Noakhali Zilla Parishad elections have been postponed by the order of the court. All the candidates in Bhola and Feni districts were elected unopposed. As a result, there is no need for any election in these two districts.
