BNP threatens to opt out of polls again
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has threatened to boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections if they are not held under supervision of a polls-supportive neutral government. BNP has no representation in the present parliament as it boycotted the last parliamentary elections in 2014 demanding a ‘non-partisan, neutral government’ for conducting election.

The 14th December
Bangladesh observes ‘Martyred Intellectuals Day’ on December 14 by paying tribute to the intellectuals and professionals who were massacred on this day in 1971 by the Pakistani occupation forces and local collaborators, mainly Jamaat. This year’s observance is different because six war crimes masterminds – Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, Abdul Quader Molla Muhammad Kamruzzaman, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Mir Quasem Ali – have been hanged. They have been convicted of rape, torture and genocide during the 1971 liberation war and subsequently executed following a due process of law.

Foreign media raise Khaleda Zia’s money laundering
A television channel based in the Middle East has unveiled that authorities in Saudi Arabia have found enormous amount of illegally obtained money by some local and foreign citizens. Foreign citizens named therein include BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Al Hariri and former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Pakistan is yet to accept Bangladesh as an independent nation
One wonders what provoked the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka to go out of diplomatic confine to publicise a video on its facebook page which claimed that Zia-Ur-Rahman (Late husband of opposition leader Begum Khalida Zia) and not Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (Late father of present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) declared Bangladesh’s independence in March, 1971.

While placing her self-defense statement on October 16 in a Dhaka court in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, BNP Chief Khaleda Zia got emotional and said Zia Orphanage case was ‘fake’ as it had been filed against her with a political motive.

On October 31 Bangladesh security forces arrested a pilot from the state-run airline Biman Bangladesh Airlines accused of plotting with militants to hijack or crash a plane in a spectacular attack on the pattern of 9/11 terrorist attack on Twin Tower.
On way to miraculous development
Bangladesh is now being tagged globally as the “land of impossible attainments”. The country has already achieved the targets set for hunger and poverty-free society under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The success in poverty reduction has been well acclaimed by the international community. The country will be projected as a focal country in a global initiative to end hunger by 2025 to be launched in the US.
