Gesture shown by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at the passing away of President Zillur Rahman has been welcomed by all sections of people. Democracy will be further consolidated and strengthened in Bangladesh if everybody follows Khaleda Zia’s gesture. She has announced postponement of BNP’s agitational programmes including hartal and instructed her party units to observe the government announced State mourning in a befitting manner. This gesture will certainly have salubrious impact on the political environment and culture of the country. She has also put on hold all organizational activities of BNP.

প্রয়োজন নেই তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের
সংবিধান সংশোধনের মাধ্যমে যে তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের প্রথা ১৯৯৬ সালে শুরু করা হয়েছিল, তা বাতিল হওয়াতে বি এন পি-নেতৃত্বাধীন বিরোধী জোট তীব্র আন্দোলন শুরু করেছে।বিরোধীরা বলছে, তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের প্রথা ফিরিয়ে না আনলে কিছুতেই তারা আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের অধীনে সংসদীয় নির্বাচনে অংশ নেবেনা। তাদের আশঙ্কা, বর্তমান ক্ষমতাসীন দল নির্বাচনে নিজেদের স্বপক্ষে কারচুপি করবে।

Turning Bangladesh in to Banglastan
“In the subcontinent if we (Bangladesh) and Pakistan unite, we wont have to care about ‘Malauns’ (a derogatory term for Hindus) and Nasaras (Christians)” says a Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) run Facebook page Basher Kella. “We will name this country Islamic Republic of Banglastan or join with Pakistan where only Muslims live”, it added.
Menacing hartal and trade
Hartal and hartal and hartal. How many of such hartals will take place? Last Tuesday marked the end of 36 hour hartal enforced by the BNP led 18 Party Allaince. 14 hartals have been enforced in the country since February last. Hartals marked by violence were the norm. There were more than 40 incidents of vandalization and attacks on train during the hartal. More than 700 buses were set on fire. Hartals enforced by Jamaat were characterized by loss of life in violence, cocktail explosion, vandalism, arson and all-encompassing sabotage that include burning national flag, desecration of Shaheed Minars and attacks on minority. In the hartal jointly organized by BNP and Jamaat violence claimed more than 100 lives. Some law enforcers also lost life.

BNP’s right decision
‘BNP discards Jamaat for its February 17 rally’, reads front page news published in a national daily of Bangladesh. According to the news BNP decided to disassociate itself from Jamaat for its February 17 rally to press for restoration of caretaker government in the country. This reminds us of what happened four decades ago when the new born Bangladesh started getting recognition from other countries of the world. Now it seems that the country is on the verge of getting full recognition. The term ‘full recognition’ has been used with a particular purpose in mind. The political party which had rehabilitated the anti-liberation Razakar/Jamaat in independent Bangladesh, knowing full well the heinous war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by them to thwart emergence of the country, has at long last got the right message from the country’s youth who have assembled at Shahbag. The party has now realized its mistake.
BNP discarding JEI?
Media reports indicate that the main opposition BNP disassociated itself from Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI), its alliance partner, before holding a rally on February 17 in Dhaka in support of demand for restoration of caretaker government. Senior BNP leaders convinced the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia that it would be in the interest of the party to discard JEI and if the JEI leaders addressed BNP’s rally, it would send a wrong signal to the country’s youths who gathered in huge number at Shahabag intersection calling for execution of war criminals and ban on JEI. But whether BNP will permanently discard its ally or it is a short term tactical measure is yet to be seen.

JEI on rampage in Bangladesh
In a country wide reign of terror unleashed to publicly demonstrate disdain for Bangladesh’s independence, the anti-liberation forces including Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI), its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) and their sympathizers went on rampage across the country, attacking law enforcers, journalists and pro-liberation secular forces. They also burnt the country’s national flag and defiled Shaheed Minars (Martyrs memorials) just a day after Bangladesh observed Language Martyrs Day. They chose the mosques as launching pads for unleashing attacks with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), guns and sticks leaving at least four persons killed and over a thousand injured. The mosques and madrassas of the country have been turned into arsenals by them.
No need for caretaker Government in Bangladesh
The cancellation of the caretaker government system, introduced in 1996 through Constitutional amendment by the then BNP-led government, has triggered stiff protests from the BNP-led opposition. They have been reiterating that they will never participate in a parliamentary election under the Awami League (AL)-led government, alleging that the incumbent will manipulate the poll in its own favour.
