BNP’s right decision

BNP’s right decision

‘BNP discards Jamaat for its February 17 rally’, reads front page news published in a national daily of Bangladesh. According to the news BNP decided to disassociate itself from Jamaat for its February 17 rally to press for restoration of caretaker government in the country. This reminds us of what happened four decades ago when the new born Bangladesh started getting recognition from other countries of the world. Now it seems that the country is on the verge of getting full recognition. The term ‘full recognition’ has been used with a particular purpose in mind. The political party which had rehabilitated the anti-liberation Razakar/Jamaat in independent Bangladesh, knowing full well the heinous war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by them to thwart emergence of the country, has at long last got the right message from the country’s youth who have assembled at Shahbag. The party has now realized its mistake.

In a report carried in February 16 issue of The Economist published from London, it is stated that Shahbag rally is the biggest rally in Bangladesh for at least two decades. Many BNP supporters have been attending the rally at Shahbag daily. BNP remained tight lipped about the Shahabag movement all these days. Now the party can not denounce the Shahbag rally.

Shahbag movement has forced the BNP to revise its stand on the issue of war crimes and anti-liberation forces. It has also driven Jamaat to desperation. Jamaat feels at a loss and is unable to decide which way to go. The editor of a pro-Jamaat daily is now off balance and talking non-sense. A few days back he and his wife dismissed the huge gathering at Shahbag as mere ‘photo-shop’. The editor became so infuriated that he did not even hesitate to describe the young Shahbag protesters as ‘son of pigs’.

BNP has got the right message emanating from Shahbag. It has understood that anti- liberation azakar/Jamaat are no longer acceptable to the young generation. On the possibility of Jamaat taking anti-BNP stance, Acting Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that in the event of any partner moving out from the alliance, doors will remain open for other emocratic organizations and the alliance will become stronger.

At last good sense has dawned on BNP. There is an English proverb ‘better late than never’. The young generation hopes that the BNP will henceforth move in the right direction.
