False Propaganda by Mahmudur Rahman

Mahmudur Rahman, Editor of daily Amar Desh, has called upon all to keep ‘Monday Roja’ and said that the government is inciting terrorism through Shahbag. In this context we may ask him who unleashed terror in the national mosque, vandalizing furniture/tiles and beating up security guards even before conclusion of the jumma prayer last Friday; who raised slogans in the mosque for issue of ‘fatwa’ against the Shahbag youths; who made the Shaheed Minars (Martyrs’ memorials) and ‘Jagoran Manchas’ (Awakening Platforms) targets of their vandalism; and lastly who desecrated the national flag and torched the Press Club. Are they not terrorists?

The Shahbag protesters demand that war criminals who perpetrated brutalities on the freedom fighters, raped women and committed crimes against humanity to thwart the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971 in collusion with the marauding Pakistani forces be meted out justice. How can this justifiable and genuine demand be equated with terrorism?

As for the alliance of 12 Islamic parties, our question is - if these parties follow Islam why they are divided into 12. Islam does not have any division. They gave a call for agitation seeking punishment to the so-called ‘atheist and anti-Islam bloggers’ and protest against ‘conspiracy to ban Islamic politics’. Mahmudur supported cadres whipped up religious sentiments of the devout and gullible Muslims who came out to support them and in the name of protecting Islam they indulged in subversive activities to project the Shahbag movement as anti-Islam. Now the people of the country have realized their game plan. The Prime Minister has said that the government will not tolerate anti-Islamic activities from any quarters.

Shahbag movement is unique in the sense that it is apolitical, spontaneous and has no link with religion. Hundreds of thousands of young men and women have come out on the roads to express solidarity with the movement. All political parties, barring the pro-Pak and anti-liberation ones, have extended support to this movement. Support has also come from Bangladeshi Diaspora from other countries. Who are the terrorists – Shahbag protesters or the Mahmudur supported cadres? The answer is clear to all.
