Mahmudur Rahman – Right Step by the Government

Editor of the daily Amar Desh, Mahmudur Rahman, was increasingly resorting to falsehood to carry out false propaganda against the government prior to his arrest. A headline report captioned ‘Mahmudur Rahman: A Target of the government and pro-India lobby’ that appeared on online edition of the daily on 26.5.13 bears tell-tale evidence of efforts made by him to misguide the readers through falsehood and forgery Mahmudur Rahman was certainly not arrested for his anti-government stance as is being claimed.

Mahmudur Rahman was manufacturing news with the intention of whipping up religious sentiments of devout Muslims and inciting them to cause public disorder. He was offending religious sentiments by distorted use of the Kaaba Sharief Ghalib and its Grand Mufti in news reports published by his Amar Desh daily. He also published a news report about Imams forming a human chain at Kaaba Sharief (Saudi Arabia) to protest the persecution of Alems (Islamic scholars) in Bangladesh. His intention was to intensify intolerance by arousing flames of religious passion.

Hifazat-e-Islam appeared on the stage at a time when the youth sponsored Shahbag movement demanding capital punishment to Razakar, Al Badr and war criminals reached its peak. Hifazat leaders on their part voiced their demands for punishment of Shahbag bloggers and free thinkers accusing them of being atheists and anti-Islam. Mahmudur Rahman’s Amar Desh had a distinct role behind the resurgence of Islamists under the banner of Hifazat-e-Islam.

When asked, Alam Ahmatullah, Hifazat’s Publicity Secretary admitted that he had not read what the Gano Jagoran Manch activists wrote in their blogs, but he had gone through all the reports published in the daily Amar Desh about the Shahbag bloggers. In fact, this will be the answer of all the Islamist groups fighting against Gano Jagoran Manch activists at Shahbag. Jamaat-Shibir activists and their cohorts moved to

Shahbagh to vandalize Gano Jagoran Mancha, on the way they vandalized and torched vehicles, exploded bombs and obstructed police from discharging duties after being instigated by motivated news of the daily Amar Desh. Leaders of the Islamist groups embarked upon a course of action intended to take the country backwards towards the medieval age and waged jihad against the progressive forces.

The government could not remain a silent spectator to what Mahmudur Rahman was doing by resorting to fabricated reporting in order to misguide the people; it moved in the right direction and arrested Mahmudur Rahman. How can the opposition demand release of Mahmudur Rahan in stead of demanding his trial for sedition? Publishing reports manufactured at home by resorting to falsehood in order to incite people to take up arms against the State amounts to sedition. Attempts are being made to arouse public sympathy by publishing photographs of Mahmuduur Rahman in police custody.Thank God, he now stands unmasked before the people.
