Dhaka, February 1: Model-actress Sharmeen Akhee (26), who was burnt in an explosion and fire while shooting a drama, is still in critical condition, doctors said. Akhee is currently undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Dr. SM Ayub Hossain, Resident Surgeon of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said on Monday afternoon that 35 percent of Sharmeen Akhee's body, including her respiratory tract, was burnt. She has inhalation burns. As her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to the High Dependency Unit (HDU). Akhee is under observation. She is undergoing all kinds of treatment. But her situation is still critical.

Last Saturday afternoon, Sharmeen went to shoot a drama at a house next to the Apex showroom on Kalshi Road in the capital's Pallabi. She was burnt in an explosion and fire there. Later she was rescued and brought to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Sharmeen Akhee's husband producer Rahat Kabir said, "That day I dropped her at the shooting spot and was going to work. Suddenly I felt like going up a little bit. I was sitting on the sofa in the drawing room next door. Suddenly, I heard an explosion. The makeup room was adjacent to the bathroom at that shooting spot. There was work going on with her hair straightener. The bathroom door was broken due to the explosion."

He said, "Akhee was wearing synthetic clothes. Then she was quickly rescued and rushed to Islamia Hospital first. From there in the evening, she was shifted to the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute."

Rahat Kabir said, "The shooting spot was new. The washroom was also new and the colour was raw. They believe that the explosion occurred from the gas accumulated in that bathroom. From there the fire started due to a short circuit."
