Dhaka, July 3: A bill aiming to ensure the welfare of actors and actresses in Bangladesh, alongside providing financial support to ailing artistes, was passed in parliament on Saturday.

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud moved the Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Welfare Trust Bill, 2021 and it was passed by voice vote.

The bill's main objectives are to ensure the welfare of film actors and actresses, provide financial support to those artistes who need it, assist the kin in the case of the artiste's death, and implement programs to be undertaken by the trust, reports said.

A 13-member board, headed by the information minister as its chairman, will run the trust.

Additionally, a managing director will be appointed to act as the executive chief of the trust.

The tenure of each member will be three years from the date of their appointment.

Reports said the board will meet at least once every four months in Dhaka.
