Cricket Celebrates Mujib 100: AR Rahman, other artists get tax benefits

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 2: All local and foreign artists who had participated in the 'Cricket Celebrates Mujib 100' event have been exempted from income tax applicable on various expenses including their fees.

Oscar-winning legendary Indian musician AR Rahman and more than two hundred local and foreign artists participated in the event.

This information has been revealed in the order signed by the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Munim. It is learned that the decision was taken on March 28. This was revealed on Saturday (April 2) by the NBR's public relations department.

According to the NBR order, all the local and foreign artists, who had participated in 'Cricket Celebrates Mujib 100' concert on March 29 which was organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on the occation of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be exempted from paying all applicable income taxes on fees or charges, accommodation or hotel rent, airfare, travel and other expenses.

In addition, income tax levied on event equipment, sound systems, lights, LED screens, stage construction materials and fireworks materials imported from abroad for the event by the event management organization is exempted from all types of income tax levied on television production expenses. However, the tax-exempt money has to be spent on the overall development of cricket in the country. This order has been effective from March 28.

A mega concert titled 'Cricket Celebrates Mujib 100' was held on the evening of March 29. Musician AR Rahman took part in it with a team of 240 co-artists. He sang 35 songs, including two songs on Bangabandhu. The concert was organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Bangladesh's time-honoured band Miles and folk empress Mumtaz performed before AR Rahman's performance.
