Dhaka, April 5: Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak MP said that one and a half to two lakh tonnes of potatoes will be exported to Russia next year.

He said this at the signing ceremony of MoU between Bangladesh and Russia to export potatoes at Hotel Intercontinental in the capital on Tuesday.

Abdullah Sajjad, chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation on behalf of Bangladesh and Abdus Sattar Mia, chairman of National Group on behalf of Russia, signed the agreement.

Dr. Abdur Razzak said that the country's climate and soil are very favorable for potato production. At present more than one million tons of potatoes are being produced annually. "Our requirement is 80 lakh tonnes per annum, the remaining 20 lakh tonnes are available for export. We are working on sales."

He also said that the export of potatoes to Russia was stopped for a long time. Now our potatoes are pathogen free and safe. After receiving this assurance, Russia lifted the ban on exports. Although not much this year, next year one and a half to two lakh tons of potatoes will be exported.
