Dhaka, August 26: In the last two days, 1,000 tonnes of wheat from India has arrived at the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria. One hundred tons of wheat was unloaded from the port on Thursday (August 25) from noon to evening. A company named Islam Agrobet Limited imported the wheat from India. M/s Khalifa Enterprise is doing customs clearing of Akhaura land port of wheat.

According to the sources of Akhaura land port, after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, the Indian government banned the export of wheat to keep the supply of wheat normal and the price under control. As a result traders could not open LC for new import of wheat. However, the LC wheats that were opened before the ban got stuck due to heavy rains and landslides that blocked the rail and road connectivity of Tripura.

Later, when the communication system was activated, wheat from the old LC started arriving at the Akhaura land port from August 1. However, after August 7, no more wheat shipment came. After a 16-day shutdown, wheat imports from India resumed last Wednesday (August 24).

Md. Mozammel Haque, representative of Messrs. Khalifa Enterprises, said that Islam Agrobet Ltd. had opened an LC for the import of 2,500 metric tons of wheat before the Indian government imposed a ban on wheat export. One thousand tons of wheat in the first shipment of that LC arrived at Akhaura land port in the last two days. Among them, 300 tons of wheat in 11 trucks on Wednesday afternoon. And on Thursday, the remaining 700 tons of wheat arrived in 34 trucks. About 100 tons of wheat was released from the port from noon to afternoon on this day. He said that the remaining 1,500 tons of LC wheat will arrive at Akhaura land port next week.
