Bangladesh to implement Tk 5905 crore project to cover cyclone, flood damages

Dhaka, November 16: In addition to the corona virus, 2019 and 2020 were devastated by natural disasters. The first super cyclone of the current century hit in May. The cyclone Amphan hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh, Orissa and West Bengal in India. These areas are the victims of extensive damage.

Bangladesh has also witnessed the long-term floods of the present century. Heavy rains were also significant. These natural disasters cause extensive damage to roads, bridges, culverts, houses, schools, colleges, various establishments, crops, etc.

The government is going to take a project at a cost of Tk 5,905 crore to compensate for the damage caused by the floods. The project is scheduled to be tabled for approval at the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (November 16).

The project will be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) of the Ministry of Local Government / Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. The project will be implemented between October this year and December 2023.

The project will be implemented in Amphan affected 69 upazilas in 14 districts of Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Dhaka divisions; flood-affected 182 upazilas in 28 districts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Chittagong divisions; and 139 upazilas of 22 districts affected by heavy rains in Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.

Preservation of rural road communication system through rehabilitation of damaged roads and bridges and culverts damaged by cyclone Amphan and flood, saving transportation cost and time through sustainable road maintenance, simplification of marketing of various products, direct / indirect to agriculture / non-agricultural sector through repair and rehabilitation of road infrastructure. The purpose of the project is to create employment and keep the rural economy afloat.
