Bangladesh to import 1.5 lakh metric tons of rice from India
Dhaka, January 7: The policy decision to import 1 lakh tonnes of non-basmati and 50,000 metric tonnes of Atap rice from India on an emergency basis has been approved.
The rice will be imported on government to government basis. The decision to import was approved at a virtual cabinet meeting on economic affairs earlier this year, chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mostafa Kamal.
In a virtual briefing after the meeting, Additional Secretary to the Cabinet Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal said the rice would be procured from the National Agriculture Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) through the Food Department on a government-to-government basis.
The meeting also approved a policy proposal of the Department of Medical Education and Family Welfare to procure equipment, medicines, other materials and services on an urgent basis to provide medical facilities to Covid-19 patients directly at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The cost has been estimated at about Tk 10.26 crore.
