Denmark | Port Bangladesh will consider Maersk's proposal to build a new container terminal in Chittagong: PM Hasina
Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 28 August 2023: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the concerned authorities of Bangladesh will consider the proposal of Danish shipping and logistics giant Maersk Group to build and operate a new container terminal at Laldia in Chittagong.
Sheikh Hasina said, "The concerned authorities of Bangladesh will consider the Maersk Group's proposal for building and operating a new container terminal at Laldia."
He said this when Maersk Group Chief Executive Officer Robert Maersk Uggla and Danish Charge d'Affaires in Bangladesh Anders Karlsen went to meet the Prime Minister at her office on Monday.
Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted the Prime Minister as saying in a press conference after the meeting that Sheikh Hasina said, "More than 50 Danish companies are working in Bangladesh and Maersk Group is now showing interest in building and operating the APM Terminal in Laldia."
The Prime Minister said that a national committee has been formed to formulate logistics policies for port development.
Hasina said Chittagong and Mongla ports are already operational for a long time and the government is developing another port called Payra port and it will be operational soon.
Sheikh Hasina said that India, Nepal and Bhutan have been given the opportunity to use these ports for mutual benefit. She also said that there will be many opportunities and facilities in these ports, especially Payra port.
Referring to the contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the development and welfare of the nation, Sheikh Hasina said that the great leader struggled for the economic emancipation of the people throughout his life.
In the meeting, the CEO of Maersk Group said that Bangladesh has a lot of potential in terms of container shipping and logistics support. Robert Maersk welcomed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's dream of building 'Smart Bangladesh' and said that it will be reflected in Chittagong sea port.
He expressed his interest in investing in the development of ports and logistics support in Bangladesh and said that there are many opportunities in these sectors.
