Chittagong port's container-cargo handling hits record high in FY 2021-22

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, July 2: The country's main Chittagong seaport's container and cargo handling has hit a record high in the 2021-22 financial year, which is much more than the previous financial year.

In the just ended 2021-22 financial year, 32 lakh 55 thousand 358 single containers have been handled through Chittagong port. This number is 5 percent more than the previous financial year. Besides, 11 crore 81 lakh 74 thousand 160 metric tonnes of cargo has been handled, which is higher than the previous financial year.

Chittagong Port Secretary Omar Farooq said there was more handling of containers, cargo and ships in the just-concluded financial year than in the previous financial year. He said container handling grew by 5.1 percent, cargo handling by 3.9 percent and ship handling by 4.2 percent. Hopefully, this trend of growth will continue in the future as well.

According to port sources, 32 lakh 55 thousand 358 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) containers have been handled in Chittagong Port in the 2021-2022 fiscal year which just ended on June 30, which was 30 lakh 97 thousand 263 TEUs in the previous financial year. Cargo handling has been 11 crore 81 lakh 74 thousand 160 metric tonnes in the just ended financial year. However, in the previous fiscal year 2020-21, it was 11 crore 37 lakh 29 thousand 373 metric tonnes.

At the same time, Chittagong port has handled more than 169 ships. In the fiscal year 2021-22, Chittagong port has handled 4,231 ships carrying containers, cargo and tankers. But in the previous fiscal year 2020-21, it had handled 4,062 ships.
