Dhaka roads witnessed an added half a million motorcycles in last 10 years

Dhaka, October 26: The use of motorcycles is increasing everyday in the congested city of Dhaka. The number of legal motorcycles in the capital has increased by 268 percent in the last 10 years.

According to experts, the boom is a direct result of popularity of ride sharing apps, which beagn in 2016.

According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the number of motorcycles registered in Dhaka till 2010 was 210,081. At the end of September this year, this number has risen steadily to 7,73,170.

As a result, the number of legal motorcycles in Dhaka has increased by 5,63,089 in 10 years. The growth rate of this motorcycle is 268 percent. Of these, the number of legal motorcycles in Dhaka has increased by 3,35,844 in the last four years.

Reviewing the data, it is seen that the number of motorcycles in Dhaka has been increasing rapidly since 2016.

From this time onwards, ride sharing has become popular in the country. From 2011 to 2015, where 30 to 40 thousand new motorcycles were being registered in Dhaka every year, in 2016, for the first time, the number of new motorcycle registrations exceeded half a million. In that year 53,738 new motorcycles were registered.

Its number increases with the passage of time.

In 2017, 75,251 new motorcycles were registered in Dhaka. And in 2018, for the first time, the number of newly registered motorcycles exceeded one lakh. 1,04,064 new motorcycles were registered in that year.

The growth rate of motorcycles in Dhaka will continue in the next year as well. In 2019, the number of newly registered motorcycles in the city stood at 99,256. In the first nine months of this year, 57,273 new motorcycles have been registered.

However, business had been stalled for more than two months this year due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The respiratory disease was first identified in Bangladesh on March 8. The government had declared a general holiday from March 26 to May 30 to curb the outbreak of Covid-19. As a result, registration of new motorcycles was closed at that time

Meanwhile, despite the increase in the number of motorcycles, the number of new microbuses in Dhaka has decreased in the last few years.
