Government to import another 50,000 tonnes of rice from India

Dhaka, December 31: The Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement has approved the Food Ministry's proposal to purchase another 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati cooked rice from India. The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement held online on Wednesday (December 30).

The rice will be procured for the fiscal year 2020-21 through international tenders. The total cost that will be incurred by the government will be Tk 168,62,90,400.

MSPK AgriLink Pvt. Ltd. from Birbhum in India's West Bengal will supply the rice. The price of rice per tonne has been set at USD 397.71. The price of rice per kg will be Tk 33.72, excluding VAT.

Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal, Additional Secretary, Cabinet Division, told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement. The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal said, "Earlier, on December 3 and 9, the government approved a proposal to purchase 100,000 tonnes of non-basmati cooked rice in two orders of 50,000 each for the fiscal year 2020-21 through international quotations. At that time the price of rice was Tk 34.28 and Tk 35.27 per kg. The purchase price per ton is USD 404.35 and 416 respectively.
