Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 8 December 2023: India has announced stoppage of onion export in order to control the price of onion in the domestic market. The ban will remain in force till March 2024. The Times of India reported this information in a report on Friday, December 8, quoting the Indian news agency PTI.

India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that the export of onion has been banned till March 31, 2024. However, export of onions will be allowed on the basis of the permission granted by the Central Government after the request of the concerned countries.

According to the notification, onion consignments fulfilling any of the following three conditions will be allowed to be exported.

1. Onions prepared for export prior to this notification.

2. Where shipping bills have been submitted and vessels have already berthed or reached and anchored at Indian ports for loading onions and have been allotted rotation numbers prior to this notification. Authorization to load such vessels shall be issued only after confirmation from the concerned port authorities about the anchorage and berthing of the vessel for loading onions before notification.

3. In cases where the consignment of Onion has been handed over to Customs and registered in their system prior to this notification/where the consignment of Onion has entered the Customs Station for export prior to this notification and has been registered in the electronic system of the concerned Custodian of the Customs Station. But in this case there should be verifiable proof of date and time stamping of entry at customs station before issuing this notification.

Earlier, at the end of last October, India had fixed the minimum price limit for onion export to keep the supply normal and price stable in the country's market. At that time, the central government of the country set a minimum price of USD 800 per ton of onions. Meanwhile, the central government of India has announced a ban on the export of onion till March 31 next year.
