Indian onions awaiting entry at Bhomra port

Dhaka, January 2: Despite stopping onion exports amid the coronavirus pandemic, India lifted the ban on exports from December 29 thus Then starting it again.

Seven trucks of onions are waiting to enter Bangladesh from India through Bhomra land port in Satkhira on Saturday (January 2). Authorities said approval had been sought from the Bhomra Port Assistant Commissioner's Office for the trucks to enter.

Maqsood Khan, treasurer of the Bhomra C&F Agents Association, an association of traders, said onion imports were stopped on September 14 on the instructions of the Indian government. There is a possibility of importing 30 trucks of onions on the first day after lifting the ban.

Akbar Ali, revenue officer at the Bhomra land port's assistant commissioner's office, said traders had agreed to import seven trucks of onions from India to enter Bangladesh through Bhomra port by 2.30pm. These trucks are now waiting to enter the country through the Indian port of Ghojadanga.

Earlier, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, India stopped exporting onions at the behest of the Indian Ministry of Commerce. As a result, the onion market in Bangladesh became unstable. The price has gone up and onions are being sold at Tk 250-300 per kg.
