Low price for Aman rice leaves farmers dissatisfied

Dhaka, November 27: In Naogaon district, bumper crop of aman has been harvested this time but farmers are not happy with the low price for the rice.

On Friday (November 26) morning, the supply of Satihat paddy in the upazila increased but the buyers were less. During the week, the price of all paddy in the market has come down by Tk 100-150 per quintal.

Paddy prices were high 15-20 days ago. But the farmers are shocked by the sudden fall in prices.

According to the Naogaon Department of Agricultural Extension, aman has been produced in about 1,91,700 hectares of land in the district this season.

Aman cultivation depends on rainfall during the monsoon season in Naogaon, a district known for its northern grain reserves. This year the yield has been good as the weather is favorable. Although there was an insect attack on the paddy, there was not much damage. Towards the end of cutting and threshing of paddy.

Meanwhile, December is the time of halakhata in this area. Therefore, the import of paddy has increased in the market to pay the arrears. Buyers are less interested in imports. Due to this the price of paddy has come down in the market.

Local farmers said that in the last 15 days, the price of Swarna-5 paddy was Tk 1,150 per quintal, while Guti Swarna was Tk 1,050 per quintal. In Mandar Satihat and other markets, the price of Swarna-5 paddy has come down to Tk 1,000-Tk 1,050 and the price of guti gold has come down to Tk 1,000.

Paddy warehouse keepers in Satihat said the prices have come down as imports are higher in the market and rice mill owners have reduced their purchases of paddy.
