Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 7: The Patenga container terminal will be operational in June this year.

Chairman of Chittagong Port Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said this. He said the terminal would be able to handle 145 million TEUS containers a year. At present the port has the capacity to hold 50,000 TEUS containers.

He said this while addressing an exchange of views with the Ambassadors of the European Union and Italy, and the BGMEA leaders at the conference room of Chittagong Port Building on Sunday.

Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said the Chittagong port was fully operational even during the critical period of the Corona pandemic. Many of our officers and employees have died of Covid related complications. The port was determined to continue its work in the face of adversity. He said the port currently has the capacity to hold 50,000 TEUS containers. But now there are 39,000 TEUS containers. In other words, there is no container clutter in the port at present.

The Chairman of Chittagong Port further said that with the opening of Bay-terminal and Patenga Container Terminal, the port's containers holding capacity as well as the working capacity will be further increased.

Earlier, Chittagong Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan exchanged views with EU Ambassador, Italian Ambassador and BGMEA leaders.

During the meeting, HE Enrico Nanziata, Ambassador of Italy, said that there is immense potential for trade and commerce in Bangladesh. Made in Bangladesh garments are popular in Europe. Ship on the Chittagong-Italy route is operational, which is a great opportunity for trade expansion between the two countries. I think trade as well as good relations between the two countries will be further strengthened.

H.E. Charles Steward Whitley, the European Union's ambassador to Bangladesh, said that for the first time, ships carrying garments would operate on the Chittagong-Italy route. This will create a conducive business environment. Bangladesh's garment sector is appreciated. We have all suffered because of Corona. All importers and exporters in the garment sector have suffered. The government of Bangladesh has undertaken many mega projects for the development of the economy. Bangladesh will go further, will be stronger economically. We are delighted and proud to be a commercial partner.
