Permission to import 5 lakh tons of onion in four days
Dhaka, June 9, 2023 : To control prices, the government has allowed the import of 5 lakh 4 thousand metric tons of onion in four days till Thursday afternoon.
On the contrary, 15 thousand tons of onions have arrived in the country from India. This information was informed in the press release of the Ministry of Agriculture on Thursday.
The Ministry of Agriculture informed last Sunday (June 4) that the government will allow the import of onions from Monday due to the abnormal increase in prices. Unscrupulous traders destabilized the onion market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. They themselves syndicate and increase the price as they wish. A month before Eid-ul-Azha, the price of onion skyrocketed in the market.
Last Saturday, the price of onion rose to Tk 100 per kg. On Sunday evening, the news came that the onion import was allowed from the next day (Monday). Onion prices in the wholesale market fell by Rs 25 per kg soon after the IPO began offering on Monday. However, there was no impact on the prices in the retail market that day.
Indian onion was sold at 40 to 45 rupees in the wholesale market of the country on Wednesday. Due to this, the price of local onion has also decreased. Desi onion is being sold at 50 to 54 taka. However, the trend of falling prices in the retail market is slower than in the wholesale market.
