Own correspondent, Dhaka, 8 February 2024: The government is importing potatoes from India to control the price. The price of potato is decreasing due to the news of import.

In the capital, potatoes are being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg, down by Tk 10 compared to last week. Prices are also falling in different districts of the country. Over the course of a month, the wholesale market has dropped by Tk 25 to Tk 30 per kg.

This information was known after visiting Rampura and Karwan Bazar in the capital on Wednesday. According to the data, potatoes were sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 a week ago, which was Tk 50 to Tk 55 a month ago. Farid Uddin, a potato seller in Rampura market, said that the supply in the market has increased a lot. At Mokam in Gramganj, potatoes have come down to 800 taka per maund, which was 1600 to 1800 taka a month ago. Import news has also had a big impact on the potato market. Prices are falling. It is now the full season. All in all, relief is returning to the market after a long time.

Although Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) data says, potatoes are still being sold at 40 percent higher prices in the market than last year. Last year, the price of potato per kg was between Tk 22 and Tk 28. On the other hand, the government is allowing the import of potatoes from India to control the market due to rising prices even during the peak season. Last Thursday, the import of 34 thousand tons was allowed. Earlier, various importers have taken permission to import potatoes. which started coming from India last Saturday.
