Prices go up, small cows not available even for Tk 1 lakh

Dhaka, June 26: Despite the increase in demand for small cows at low prices during Eid-ul-Azha, no cow can be found below one hundred thousand taka. As a result, cow buyers are going back from the market empty handed. Last year a cow of the same size or weight was sold for less than 90,000 taka. This year, the lowest price is Tk 120,000.

Traders say that a cow worth 100,000 taka will have three and a half maunds of meat. According to that, the price of each kg of meat will be around 1000 taka. But the current price of beef in the market is 800 taka per kg.

At the capital's Aftabnagar market on Monday (June 26) morning, the demand for small cows was high, but the supply of small cows was less than that of large cows. That is why small or medium size cows cost much more. However, not many buyers were found in the market since morning. Most of those who have seen their presence are visitors.

In terms of price per kg, small cows are much more expensive than big cows in the market. If you buy a cow weighing 7 to 10 maunds, the price of meat per kg is on average 700-800 taka, which is 100-200 taka per kg more for small cows.

Khaled Hossain, a trader who brought cows to the market from Pabna, told Jago News that everyone wants small cows. This is why the price is high. The demand for big cows is less this time. So the price is low.

The increase in the cost of animal feed and rearing is also the reason for the increase in the price of sacrificial animals, said traders. This year, the price of livestock on Eid-ul-Azha is higher than the previous years. As the buyers are not able to match the desired animal at the desired price, again the sellers are also worried about not getting the price.

Talking to many traders, it is known that the price of cattle has increased by Tk 20 to Tk 50 thousand this year compared to last year depending on the shape.

In Aftabnagar haat last year, the price of small and medium sized cows (3 to 5 maunds in weight) was 28 to 29 thousand taka per maund and large cows (weighing more than 5 maunds) were sold at taka 26 to 27 thousand per maund. This year, small and medium sized cows are selling at 32 to 35 thousand and big cows are being sold at Tk 30 to 32 thousand. Although most dealers initially charge higher prices.
