Prime Minister Hasina pushes for production boost, reduction in import of edible oil

Dhaka, March 22: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has emphasized on cultivating soybean and sunflower to reduce edible oil imports. The Prime Minister gave instructions in this regard at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (March 22). Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters after the meeting.

Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting held at NEC Conference Room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. She took part in the meeting via video conference from her official residence Ganobhaban.

Highlighting the Prime Minister's directive, the Planning Minister said that the import of edible oil should be reduced and production should be increased. We have to reduce imports and go for production in the country. To this end, the Prime Minister has asked to cultivate soybean and sunflower. Tk 438.94 crore was sanctioned for the 'Seed Growing Farm Establishment Project in Southeastern Bangladesh'. During the approval of the project, the Prime Minister asked to go for production of oil seeds, including nuts.

Highlighting the Prime Minister's directive on quota for rail recruitment, MA Mannan said that they have been enjoying it since time immemorial. Railway people get some quota by working. If this honor is given, they are honored. The Prime Minister has said that 40 to 50 percent quota facility can be given to the families of those who work in the railways.

State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam said nuts are good in Feni area. Where the Prime Minister has spoken of producing oil seeds. Oilseeds including soybean, mustard, sesame and groundnut should go into seed production. If necessary, the Prime Minister said it should be further researched and spread across the country.
