World Bank will help in financial sector reform: Finance Minister

Dhaka, Jan 20: Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali said that the World Bank will assist in financial sector reform.

He said this to reporters after a courtesy meeting with Abdoulaye Seck, Country Director of the World Bank, in the meeting room of the Ministry of Finance at the Secretariat on Thursday. In response to a question, the finance minister said that the World Bank said that the financial sector of the country needs reforms. They are ready to cooperate in this regard. They also promised overall support for economic development.

When asked about any reforms to be made, without mentioning any specific sector, he said, overall reforms have been discussed. Abdoulaye Seck said that the World Bank has provided financial assistance of about 52 billion dollars so far after independence. Another USD 16 billion in aid was recently pledged.

Meanwhile, according to sources in the Ministry of Finance, in the meeting, the country director of the World Bank called for the reform of the currency exchange rate, monetary policy, interest rate of the country's financial sector as well as taking effective initiatives to reduce inflation.
