Burial of heroic freedom fighter cannot happen without guard of honor: High Court

Dhaka, February 8: Expressing anger over the burial of Abdul Motaleb Sikder, a heroic freedom fighter of Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj, without state dignity and guard of honor, the High Court said that the freedom fighter was insulted by burying him without guard of honor. It cannot be tolerated.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir made the remarks on Tuesday (February 8). At the same time, the court has issued a rule to investigate the burial of Abdul Motaleb Sikder, a heroic freedom fighter of Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj, without taking state status and to take action against those involved.

Barrister Syed Saidul Haque Sumon appeared for the writ petition. Barrister Kazi Mainul Hasan and Assistant Attorney General Nasim Islam Raju represented the state.

Earlier, a writ petition was filed in the High Court on January 31 seeking investigation into the burial of Abdul Motaleb Sikder, a heroic freedom fighter of Bajitpur upazila in Kishoreganj. In the writ petition, instructions have been sought to give 'Guard of Honor' at the graveyard of freedom fighter Abdul Motaleb Sikder. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Syed Saidul Haque Sumon filed the writ petition. The Secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War, Deputy Commissioner of Kishoreganj and others have been made defendants in the writ petition.

According to the report published in the newspaper, the guard of honor was not given at the janaza of Abdul Motaleb Sikder, a heroic freedom fighter of Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj. Freedom fighter Abdul Motaleb Sikder, a resident of South Rabarkandi in Bajitpur Municipality, died on the night of January 28. After contacting the concerned, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was absent even though the police were present. For this he could not give guard of honor to the freedom fighter. He was later buried at the local Rabarkandi cemetery at around 3 pm on Saturday, January 29. This caused anger among the locals.
