Independence Day: President, PM pay homage to Liberation War martyrs

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 26: On the occasion of the 52nd Independence and National Day, President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid wreaths at the National Memorial on the outskirts of the city this morning (Saturday) and paid deep homage to the heroic martyrs of the Liberation War.

First the President and later the Prime Minister laid a wreath at the altar of the National Memorial. After laying the wreath, the President and the Prime Minister stood in silence for a while paying deep respects to the memory of the heroic martyrs of the great Liberation War of 1971.

A contingent of Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force saluted the nation on the occasion. At this time a sad tune was played on the bugle. The head of nation and the head of government signed the visitor's book kept in the premises of the memorial.

Later, Sheikh Hasina, as the party president, once again paid tribute with the party leaders by laying a wreath at the altar of the National Memorial.

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Chief Justice Hasan Fayez Siddiqui, senior leaders of the Awami League and senior civil and military officials were present on the occasion. Later, the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice paid homage to the martyrs by laying a wreath at the National Memorial.
