Dhaka, October 19: A meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has proposed to observe the first day of December, the month of victory, as 'Freedom Fighter's Day'.

The proposal was made at a meeting chaired by Md. Shahjahan Khan, Parliament House Committee President on Sunday.

He later said, "It has been proposed to celebrate the Freedom Fighters' Day so that the freedom fighters can be remembered even when they are not there."

The Sector Commanders Forum had earlier demanded that the first day of the month of December be declared as 'Freedom Fighter's Day' with the title of 'National Hero' before the names of the freedom fighters.

The forum has been observing December 1 as 'Freedom Fighter's Day' all over the country since that year after holding a general assembly in Paltan on January 12, 2004.

Shahjahan said, “The day is being observed even though there is no official announcement. If the government declares a day by gazette then there is an obligation to observe it. We have told the ministry. They will now raise it in the cabinet. The cabinet will take a decision in this regard. ”

Meanwhile, the ministry informed the meeting that a proposal has been sent to the finance ministry to increase their monthly honorarium by Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,000 from the current financial year for the well-being of the freedom fighters.

It is recommended to present the detailed information of the scholarship recipients to the Ministry in the next meeting in order to check the extent to which the ideals and consciousness of the Liberation War have been implemented among the scholarship students.

Besides, it was recommended to present the details of income and expenditure of the National Freedom Fighters Council at the next meeting along with the audit report of income and expenditure.

It is recommended that the medical expenses paid to the freedom fighters from the Muktijoddha Welfare Trust be paid on a monthly basis as required.

The meeting was chaired by Shahjahan Khan and attended by committee members Akam Mozammel Haque and Kazi Firoz Rashid.
