Dhaka, March 29: President Md. Shahabuddin called upon all the forces supporting the liberation war to work together regardless of party affiliation to spread the spirit of liberation war and communal harmony at the grassroot level.

The President made this call while meeting a delegation led by prominent journalist Shahriar Kabir, president of Khatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, at Bangabhaban on Thursday.

The head of state said that the anti-independence forces wanted to lead the country in a different direction by distorting the history of liberation war and independence but the people of the country did not allow it. President's Press Secretary Zainal Abedin told BSS that he also mentioned the important role of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee in this regard.

The President said that the main goal of independence was to establish a non-communal Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty. But an anti-independence circle obstructed the achievement of that goal by assassinating Bangabandhu in 1975. He also emphasized on the ironclad unity of all pro-independence forces.

During the meeting, the delegation of Ghatak Dalal Eradication Committee invited the President to attend the national conference to be held on May 3. The delegation issued a memorandum to appoint more number of judges in the Supreme Court and to implement the recommendations of the Sahabuddin Commission for the purpose of speedy completion of the trial of the 1971 genocide. They sought the President's full cooperation in implementing the proposals and recommendations of the Shahabuddin Commission. At this time, it was informed that the 1971 Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee will publish the suggestions and recommendations of the Shahabuddin Commission in a short form.

The current President Md. Shahabuddin was the chairman of the judicial inquiry commission formed later after the general election in 2001 to investigate the incidents of attacks, murders, rapes and looting of BNP-Jamaat alliance leaders on the minority communities. This commission is known as Shahabuddin Commission.
