Dhaka, May 11: Eighty lawyers have applied to extend the retirement period of freedom fighter judges of the Supreme Court by one year.

This application has been made to the President, Prime Minister, Speaker, Chief Justice, Public Administration Minister and Law Minister.

According to the petition, according to Section 4 'A' of the Public Employees Retirement (Amendment) Act, 2013, the retirement age of all freedom fighters public employees is one year more than that of ordinary public employees.

The state provides special benefits to all freedom fighters in their respective places and workplaces, but there is no such benefit in the case of judges. The petitioner's lawyers feel that similar benefits should be provided in their case.

According to Article 96 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh (Fifteenth Amendment, 2011), the retirement age of Supreme Court judges is currently 67 years. In this case, an application has been made to extend the retirement period of the freedom fighter judge.

The petition was made to the President, Prime Minister, Speaker, Chief Justice, Public Administration Minister and Law Minister demanding that the retirement period of freedom fighter judges of the Supreme Court be extended by one year from other judges. On May 9, 80 lawyers of the Supreme Court applied to the registry by post.

It is said in the application that the greatest chapter in the history of the Bengali nation is the liberation war of 1971. As a result of the liberation war, the independent and sovereign Bangladesh state emerged. In 1971, responding to the call of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the best Bengali of a thousand years, the people of this country risked their lives and took part in the liberation war. Through nine months of bloody war, our freedom was gained in return for the glory of three million martyrs and two hundred thousand mothers and sisters. The children of the country who sacrificed their lives and participated in the great liberation war, those sun children of the nation have been honored in various ways.

According to Section 4 'A' of the Public Servants Retirement (Amendment) Act, 2013, the retirement age of all freedom fighters public servants is one year higher than that of ordinary public servants. That is, the state provides special benefits to all freedom fighters, but judges do not have this benefit. So we think that the same benefits should be provided in their case. According to Article 96 of the Constitution of Bangladesh (Fifteenth Amendment, 2011), the retirement age of Supreme Court judges is currently 67 years. In this case, freedom fighter judges can also be honored by increasing the retirement age by one year.
