88 Bangladeshi fishermen detained, three trawlers seized in India's West Bengal

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 18:�Eighty-eight Bangladeshi fishermen along with three fishing trawlers have been detained in India's West Bengal for entering Indian waters.

They were detained by Fraserganj Coastal Police in the state's South 24 Parganas district. After being detained on Tuesday, the firshermen were produced in a court on Thursday.

Among the detainees are five children. They have been sent to a home. The court remanded the remaining 83 in judicial custody for 14 days after they were taken to Kakdwip sub-divisional court on Thursday. A case has been filed against them under the illegal fishing and trespassing charges.

On Tuesday afternoon, a ship of the Indian Coast Guard spotted Bangladeshi trawlers while patrolling near Jhaukhali, 35 nautical miles inside the India-Bangladesh waters on the Bay of Bengal. After that, the coast guard detained 88 fishermen and seized three trawlers. The three trawlers were brought to Fraserganj Fisheries Port on Wednesday afternoon. At present those three trawlers are at Fraserganj Fisheries Port in Namkhana.

According to administration sources, the arrested 88 fishermen are from Banshkhali, Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar and Chittagong areas of Bangladesh.
