The fire was seen in a guest house on Mirza Ghalib Street (Free School Street) in Kolkata on Saturday early morning. A staff of the guest house said that the fire had broken out at the reception on the second floor of the building and then it quickly spread to other rooms.

Several of them fell ill after inhaling the smoke. But one old woman could not be rescued at first. Body of the 61-year-old woman was later recovered.

According to the local administration, the deceased has been identified as Samimatul Aros. She was a citizen of Bangladesh. It is known from her passport that she was a resident of Chapainawabganj. She was staying in that guest house in Kolkata for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, another Bangladeshi national, named Moinul Haque (35), was admitted to a local hospital. Mehtab Alam, a resident of West Bengal's Murshidabad district, was also admitted to hospital. Three fire tenders rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control soon.
