Golam Sarwar becomes new Secretary General of SAARC

Dhaka, July 14: Bangladesh Ambassador to Malaysia Golam Sarwar has been appointed as the next Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). His appointment was announced in a notification of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday night.

He will be the organization's 15th and third Bangladeshi Secretary General. This Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) 10th batch officer joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. Before that, he was the ambassador of Bangladesh in Oman.

Golam Sarwar also served as the ambassador of Bangladesh in Sweden. Apart from this, he served in various positions in Bangladesh Mission in Jeddah, Washington DC, Kathmandu, Kuala Lumpur and Yangon.

Golam Sarwar, a son of Noakhali, completed his master's degree in accountancy from Dhaka University. Apart from this, he completed his articled studentship with a leading Chartered Accountants and Management Consultant firm under the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB). Golam Sarwar, a professional diplomat, is the father of two children.
