India, Bangladesh to work together on marine resources

Dhaka, November 6: India and Bangladesh will work together on marine resources. Bangladesh's Fisheries and Livestock Minister S M Rezaul Karim told reporters after a meeting with Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy, at the Secretariat on Thursday.

The Minister said, "India will extend all possible assistance to the two friendly countries on how to extract maritime resources and how the imported resources can be imported and exported as per the demand of the two countries. India has expressed interest in setting up a Maritime Resource Center."

He said India was keen to use satellite data to detect fishery resources at sea, provide state-of-the-art fishing trawlers, increase the capacity and protection of fishermen, and provide meteorological assistance.

"The Indian Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies will also work with us to ensure that no boat or vessel can fish illegally while fishing in our seas or coastal areas is stopped."

The minister said effective steps have been taken on how to import and export fish and animal products produced in both the countries.

He said India has expressed interest in working together for the development of fisheries and livestock sector, construction of laboratories in the country, construction of cold storages for storage of fish, meat, milk and eggs in border areas to increase exports, construction of training institutes etc.

Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy mentioned that there is immense potential in the dairy sector in Bangladesh and expressed interest in working with Bangladesh in the dairy processing industry including capacity building in this sector.

Referring to the potential for fish exports in Bangladesh, he said there is a huge demand for Bangladeshi fish in India, especially in the state of Tripura.

He also mentioned about taking part in partnership projects in the fisheries and livestock sector.
