Indian PM Narendra Modi congratulates Sheikh Hasina over the phone after election win

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 9 January 2024: The ruling party Awami League has won by a huge victory in the 12th National Parliament elections of Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to form the government for the fourth consecutive time. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her, calling the victory historic.

Narendra Modi called the Bangladeshi Prime Minister after the announcement of the election results in Bangladesh on Monday.

Besides congratulating Sheikh Hasina for winning the fourth consecutive term, he also praised the people of Bangladesh for the 'successful election'.

Modi said in a post on his X handle that he spoke with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. "Congratulations to her for winning a historic fourth term in the parliamentary elections. I also congratulate the people of Bangladesh for holding successful elections."

Modi also expressed his commitment to further strengthen the long-standing and people-centric partnership with Bangladesh. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also congratulated Sheikh Hasina for winning the election.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said while visiting Kapilmuni's ashram at the Gangasagar Mela, "Our congratulations will go to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family and the Awami League. Stay well, stay healthy, I pray to the creator."
