Dhaka, December 3: The Coast Guard has arrested 17 Indian fishermen, including a fishing trawler, on charges of trespassing and illegal fishing in Bangladesh waters in the Bay of Bengal.

A large quantity of fish, including nets and trawlers, were seized in the incident. The Coast Guard handed over the detainees, including trawlers, nets and fish, to Mongla Police Station on Wednesday night (December 2). All the detainees are said to be residents of India's West Bengal state.

Mongla Coastguard West Zone Operations Officer Lt. Commander M Siddique Hasan said the intruders were spotted with fishing trawlers during a regular patrol in the Bay of Bengal's Fairway Buoy area near the port of Mongla on Tuesday (December 1) afternoon.

At that time, the Coast Guard detained 17 Indian nationals, including a trawler named 'FB Ma Shivani', from the territorial waters of the sea.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Mongla Police Station Md. Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury said about one metric ton of fish of different species in the trawler was sold at auction and the money was deposited in the government treasury.

The detainees will be sent to jail through the Bagerhat court on Thursday morning after a case under the Maritime Violation Act was filed against them.
