Dhaka, March 9: Two Indian ships - INS Kulish and INS Sumedha - are visiting the port of Mongla on March 8-10 to celebrate the historic anniversary of Mujib Borsho and the 50th anniversary of the Liberation War. This visit is especially significant as it is the first visit of an Indian ship to Mongla.

The last time, 50 years ago, on December 9-10, 1971, members of the Indian Navy and the Mukti Bahini, in two gunboats named Padma and Palash, conducted a joint operation on the Pashur River and attacked various Pakistani installations in the port.

In addition to the two ships, a senior officer of the Indian Navy, Commodore Mahadebu Govardhan Raju, NM, INS Sumedha, Andhra Pradesh Naval Officer-in-Charge, embarked on the voyage to show the importance that the Indian Navy attaches to fraternal relations with the Bangladesh Navy.

INS Sumedha is a locally built offshore patrol ship. The ship is led by Commander Gaurab Durga Prasad. It has been created to patrol and monitor the huge Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of India. In addition to the main gun and anti-aircraft guns, the ship also has an ALH / Aluite helicopter.

The second ship, the INS Kulish, was built specifically for anti-surface warfare operations. The ship is led by Commander Sanjeev Agnihotri and is equipped with surface-to-surface missiles, main guns, anti-aircraft guns and other missiles. It is also capable of operating helicopters.

During the visit, senior Indian officials will pay homage to Bangabandhu by laying wreaths at his tomb at Tungipara.

They will lay a wreath at the tomb of Ruhul Amin, the hero who sacrificed his life in the war on December 10, 1971 in Mongla on a gunboat.

Indian ships will honor veteran freedom fighters of the Bangladesh Navy and the Armed Forces will present a variety of historically significant items for display at the museum.

In addition, professional discussions with the Bangladesh Navy and courtesy meetings with senior officials in Mongla and Khulna will be held. There will be friendly sports and ship tours between the members of both the forces.

The two navies will conduct a joint exercise on March 10 while leaving for the country. This visit will further strengthen the strong and prosperous ties between India and Bangladesh.
