FIFA World Cup trophy's Bangladesh tour will inspire country's young generation: PM

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 9: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed hope that the FIFA World Cup trophy's Bangladesh tour will inspire the country's sports enthusiasts, especially the young generation.

She said, "I hope the young generation of the country will be inspired after seeing the FIFA World Cup trophy."

A press release from the Prime Minister's Press Wing said that the Prime Minister had expressed this hope during a meeting with a delegation at the FIFA World Cup trophy reception in the lobby of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday evening.

The seven-member FIFA delegation accompanied by 1998 FIFA World Cup winner French footballer Christian Karembeu arrived in Dhaka the day before with the World Cup trophy on a 36-hour tour of Bangladesh. At 11:20 am on Wednesday, a chartered flight from Pakistan to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka brought the gorgeous trophy.

Sheikh Hasina said football is the most popular sport in Bangladesh and that is why they are working tirelessly to involve the children of the country in this sport. She reminded the engagement of her family members in sports, especially in football.

She mentioned that her grandfather, father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, brothers, children and even grandchildren are very sporty and athletic.

The Prime Minister exchanged greetings with the members of the delegation and thanked FIFA, Coca-Cola and the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) for bringing the original World Cup trophy to Bangladesh for the first time.

Later, gifts were handed over to the Prime Minister by FIFA and Coca-Cola.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Zahid Ahsan Russell MP, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, Youth and Sports Secretary Mesbah Uddin, BFF President Kazi Salauddin, BFF General Secretary Md. Abu Naeem Sohag and BFF and Coca-Cola officials were present there.
